I need a new smartphone

I am not a very organized person.  I am, in some ways.  I have everything filed in my head or piled around the house.  As a result, however, I lose the fine details.  I get into modes every now and then where I can pull out lists and feel all organized, but then those lists get put in piles and forgotten about.  I want to be organized, but there is something that always keeps me a bit scattered.

Right now, for example, I am writing this post.  I was talking with my friend D, who is also great at the procrastination thing and we agreed that we would check in after lunch to keep each other working on our jobs.  We gave each other our specific goals to do by after lunch, and instead I am here writing.  I am thinking about all the projects I want to do in the house.    I am doing anything but what I said I’d do.

My favorite country – procrastination.

I do work, I just am always flitting from item to item, and avoiding things that I really need to do (working out, my job) in favor of things I’d rather do (my blog, my creative writing, chatting with people).  Sometimes items change from one list to another.  Some days I feel like organizing, and some days it just is the most unsavory concept I can think of.

There’s this picture of me in my head.  I’m super productive all the time.  I use my time wisely, making the most of each day.  Instead, I spend more time thinking about what I want to do rather than doing them.  Interesting, don’tcha think?

Here is a smattering of the items on my mental list, in no particular order:

  • All the backlog of work I need to do
  • File all the papers scattered throughout the house
  • Clean up the office, and find a home for all my knicknacks
  • Figure out what crapola I have in the house that I don’t use and can get rid of
  • fold the laundry
  • wash our sheets
  • clean out the fridge, and restock it with healthy food to eat.
  • read the adoption books Mel recommended
  • find an out of state agency to use once our homestudy is done
  • exercise and set tangible fitness goals to get back in shape, and stick to them
  • pick out paint for the kitchen and guest room
  • paint said rooms
  • lay the new faux tile in our kitchen
  • Call the plumber and exterminator
  • Work on both my blogs
  • Work on my creative writing (I don’t care if I write fanfic, suck it, it’s fun)
  • Read the copy of Eat Pray Love that I got for myself
  • go through our closets, including the basement, and reorganize it all
  • Keep following up with RE’s office for our refund
  • Work on bills
  • Write back all the women who have emailed me about agencies and ask questions
  • See my friends
  • Get ready for my brother to come visit this wekeend

There’s more, but that’s all I could think of for right now.  Any sane person would just go through the list, in whatever order, and work it down.  Me?  I start and stop, start and stop.  I have a feeling there are a number of you like this out there, but I still dream of organization.  Have any of you out there made the leap from being scattered to leading an organized life?  How did you do it?  Any special tools or tips?

Whenever I write a to-do list (three or four times a week), I always write ‘make a to-do list’ at the top. So I can cross it off when I’ve finished.

Which is truly sad of me.

(and the rest of the list consists of things like ‘actually do some work on the Work Project’ and ‘email your sister before she forgets what you look like’ and ‘buy shampoo’ and ‘defrost something for dinner’ and ‘stop biting your nails’. If anyon eever finds one of these lists lying around I shall die of embarrassment).

My list kicks your lists ass! LOL Lists can make you want to crawl back into bed and do nothing. You remember what I do? The problem with most people is motivation and even once you’re motivated and you come back from the Container Store with shiny pretty tools–you’ll eventually hit the middle where most people get stuck and overwhelmed. You’re not alone. You’re in the majority. Lots of people love the Fly Lady’s system. (http://www.flylady.net/pages/begin_babysteps.asp) If that’s not you’re cup of tea, email me.

I have to admit after reading your last comment at the site I met you first and after reading the comment you left at my blog and after my daily visit to the Dose of Dempsey (still haven’t figured out if you’re dreaming or obsessed) I googled you, because I wanted to know if there is more to know about you. I’m not a creepy stalker *g* I just thought you might be an interesting person to know or might have an interesting blog to read. And you definitely do, from the few posts I read here.
Procrastination galore! The fact that I’m writing this comment instead of the press release and mail I planned to do before I spent some time working on my term paper and make some dinner and … well there are a few other things I wanted to do tonight, if I just could start doing them. :-)
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I’ll probably be dropping by every once in a while, if that’s ok…
