If you are curious about what kind of test they do, here are the newborn screening disease list:

1. Galactosemia

This test would strongly relate to your baby’s metabolism. The test is to cover up your baby’s tolerance to galactose. Galactose is one of the simple sugars in milk or any kind of sweet food. If your baby has galactosemia disorder, then they cannot deal with any milk and all its products. They are not allowed to consume foods with milk or sugar. If you skip this test, you will take many health consequences, including death.

2. Phenylketonuria (PKU)

Just like galactosemia, PKU is also related to intolerant for certain food. Someone with PKU cannot process one of the protein blocks, called phenylalanine or Phe. Thus, they have to avoid any protein food, moreover the high-protein one. If the baby is late for this screening, they potentially get brain damage or late development which caused a disability.

3. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited disorder for the baby which is found in their hemoglobin. The red blood cells don’t shape as they should be. The normal condition, the red blood cells will be round discs. But people with SCD have sickles or crescent moons shape. These cells block the blood in the vessels, so the body will feel pain or even worse the organ damage.

4. Congenital Hypothyroidism

Newborn screening disease list is not only about the disorder that comes from the blood. The other organ is also important to be tested. One of the organ tests is congenital hypothyroidism or we can also say a test to the thyroid. The thyroid is a small gland below your skin and the muscles. Baby with thyroid disorder cannot make enough important hormones. If this condition takes long-term, it can develop breathing problems, low appetite, and permanent mental disabilities.

5. Biotinidase Deficiency (BIOT)

This could be one of the reasons for hearing loss. BIOT is also an inherited disorder when the body cannot recycle the vitamin of biotin. If you want to know the consequences, it doesn’t only cause hearing loss. Even worse, it could cause seizures, weak muscle tone (hypotonia), movement and balance problem (ataxia), hair loss (alopecia), and many more.

You can get the result at various times. Thus, the mother and the baby should stay for at least one until two days. When the doctor says everything is normal, usually the parents will directly go home. But when there is something needs further observation, the doctor will refer you to the specialist.
